A Guide to Grips

A guide to tennis rackets would not be complete without a section about grips. Many players do not give the grip they use much attention, but if the racket slips in your hand the ball will not be returned as you intended.

There are two main types of grips to consider. The first is a Replacement grip which as you probably guessed replaces the original grip supplied with the racket. The alternative type is an Overgrip that is wrapped over the top of the existing grip.

These names provide a very good description of what they do, and the names are familiar to many players. There are others who did not know about the different types before they viewed this page.

There are of course, advantages and disadvantages with both types. You will have to experiment a little until you find the one that is most suitable for you.

Grip Selection

You could think that the type of grip to use would be simple. This is not always the case, and many players find it difficult to find one grip that is suitable.

You can obviously try lots of different grips, and eventually you should find one that is suitable. One alternative is to look at the ones used by other players. This is not always a successful method, but it can be a useful starting point.

You may be influenced by the types used by the professional players. It is unlikely that they would use this type of product if it were unsuitable. You can try using the same grip as your favourite player and decide whether you agree with them that one they are using is a good choice.
