String Gauges The gauge of the string is simply a method of expressing how thick or thin a particular string is. There are two main measurements that are used. Normally, both are shown on the packaging of strings A number such as 15L, 16, or 17 for example. This method was originally used in North America, but is now in used generally. The diameter in millimetres (UK spelling) such as 1.25 (or 1,25 in many European countries). This should be more precise as the units used are smaller. The most popular sizes are shown in the following table. |
Notes The 15L refers to 15 Light, and indicates it is a thinner diameter than the full 15 gauge You can see that there is some overlap of the gauges. A string of 1.28 mm could be described as either 16 or 16L |
