Tennis Racket Guide - Balance

You should have read the page about racket features, and would now like some further details about the balance of a racket.

A lighter racket usually has more weight towards the head of the racket. This helps most players to produce the correct stroke. With a heavier racket, it is more evenly balanced.

Rackets usually fit into one of the groups in the following table. You can measure the balance of your racket and compare it to others.

Useful Hint

You can change the balance of your racket with lead tape. These are self-adhesive strips and easily attached to the frame of the racket.

You attach them to each side of the racket. You will need to experiment with the position, and the amount used. They can be easily removed later if required.

Tennis Racket Balance

Rackets are in one of the following groups. You can easily measure the balance point of a racket.

Head Heavy

The majority of modern rackets are much lighter than they were a few years ago. Most of these models have more weight towards the head of the racket. The balance point is greater than 345 mm from the handle.

Even Balance

A heavier racket is normally used by players with a longer swing. A balance towards the mid point of the rackets length is preferred by this type of player. The balance point is less than 345 mm from the handle.

Head Light

This type of racket is less popular. This is mainly because modern rackets are a lighter weight. The combination of a lighter racket and a light balance is not popular.
