Tennis Racket Guide - Weight

You should have read the Racket Features page and would now like some further details about the weight of a racket.

The usual weight of a racket is shown in one of the groups below. You can easily measure the weight of your own racket to see how it compares.

Power & Weight

For many years, it was impossible to produce a lightweight racket that had sufficient power. Recently, the use of different materials has caused that to change.

Tennis Racket Weight

The weight of most rackets is between 250 and 350 grams. They can be split into the following groups.

Light

250-290 grams

These rackets are the choice of most club players. They are comfortable to use for a long time because of their low weight. They are usually medium to stiff frames that generate more power.

Medium

291- 325 grams

These are for players who play with medium to fast swing. They prefer the better control from a more flexible frame. The medium weight provides more comfort than the heavier rackets.

Heavy

Over 325 grams

These would normally be used by professional players. A racket in this weight range is usually more flexible with a thinner frame. They are more suitable for players with a long, faster swing or stroke.

All the above weights are for a racket including the strings. Some racket companies will quote the weight of the frame without strings.

Note - The weight group is normally shown on a racket. This is in the form M4, L3 or SL2. The figures shown as 2, 3 or 4 refer to the size of the grip. The weights groups are Medium (M), Light (L) and Super Light (SL). They should only be used as a general guide.
