String Durability Guide

Players have very different requirements for the durability of strings. A lot of club or occasional players have their rackets restrung less than once a year. Players who use a lot of top-spin can break strings every few weeks or even days.

The durability of a string depends on the type of construction, and the materials used. The characteristics of each string group are described below.

String Costs

The cost of your strings will obviously depend on the number of restrings you have each year. It is also dependent on how many hours play you have from a set of strings.

A useful guide is to calculate the cost per hour of your strings. As an example a restring costing £20 that lasts for 50 hours playing time, costs you £0.40 per hour.

String Durability Guide

Original / Club

Players in this group do not break strings frequently. Durability is not a problem for these players, and they can concentrate more on price and performance.

Spin / Durable

If you use top-spin your strings will break more frequently. You can try using strings made from specialist materials. The most effective ones use polyester, and these strings are low cost with extra durability.

Performance

Players in this group will probably have up to two or three restrings per year. They will normally use a medium gauge string for good durability.

Competition

If you want the best performance, durability is not that important. Some strings are available in two gauges. You could try the larger gauge for improved durability.
