Tennis String Performance Guide

The performance or response from a string will depend on the type of construction, and the materials used. You must also consider the level of response you want from the string you use.

The type of performance you can expect is described for each string group.

String Costs

The cost of your strings will obviously depend on the number of restrings you have each year. It is also dependent on how many hours play you have from a set of strings.

A useful guide is to calculate the cost per hour of your strings. As an example a restring costing £20 that lasts for 50 hours playing time, costs you £0.40 per hour.

String Performance Guide

Original / Club

Players in this group want a string similar to those supplied with their racket. This type of string normally has a lower price and gives an average performance.

Spin / Durable

These strings are designed to give extra durability. They are usually a medium to large gauge and have average performance.

Specialist

This type of string is either thinner or uses different materials to produce better response in play. They will normally be a medium price.

Competition

These strings will normally use an advanced type of construction. Many of them have hundreds of individual fibres which combine to produce the best possible response. They are almost always in the higher price range.
